Jabulani Plymouth (Food Court)

Jabulani is a launchpad for start-up food and hospitality businesses in Plymouth. Delivered by Jabulani CIC and supported by DBI, its purpose is to provide real-life business experience and training to start-up food entrepreneurs from Plymouth's BAME communities,  including refugees. It does this by offering each entrepreneur the opportunity to start trading from one of the food vendor stations at the Jabulani food court, following a period of training and introduction. Each vendor station is managed as its own financial entity while enjoying the benefits of the surrounding infrastructure at the Jabulani food court, such as security, marketing, maintenance and access to suppliers.

Jabulani CIC offers the following support:

  • Provision of the venue, together with utilities (heat, light, power, water), a till and PAYG phones.

  • A shared on-site food court manager during opening hours.

  • Shared front of house and waiting staff.

  • Where possible, trainee/apprentice kitchen staff at a discounted rate.

  • In partnership with DBI, one day per week of continued business training (while the food court is closed).

Entrepreneurs are expected to contribute to a weekly fee for overheads and the additional services. As fees are subsidised by Jabulani CIC, they are generously in favour of the start-up businesses, designed to match the comparatively low level of revenue expected from a start-up venture, rather than enabling Jabulani CIC to profit from the costs of the support provided..

As a training centre, Jabulani requires funding from a contract or contracts for delivering training services. Newly operational, Jabulani CIC is still open to discussions with potential funders and partners.
