Black History Month Plymouth 2022

Black History Month was originally founded to recognise the contributions that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to the UK over many generations. Now, Black History Month has expanded to include the history of not just African and Caribbean people but black people in general.

It first started in The United States which was known as African-American History Month and was first celebrated in the United Kingdom in October 1987; the United States celebrates it every year in February while the United Kingdom celebrates it every year in October. Black History Month Plymouth has been up and running for the past 3 years thanks to the support of some amazing organisations working in collaboration with DBI in order to make it happen. We celebrate this month across and within various pillars around Plymouth, encouraging our communities to start making more change and building connections to different establishments in the city.

This year 2022 the theme and campaign are “Time for Change: Action Not Words." Encouraging Black and Brown individuals that in order to get to a better tomorrow, we can't just focus on the past. The past is in the past and all we can do is acknowledge and learn from it, however, to improve the future, we need more actions, not words. For Plymouth, this year we are using Actions as our Words with the theme "Actions are our words" encouraging our communities to start making more change.

With that being said, we are working collaboratively with different pillars around the city such as University of Plymouth, Arts University Plymouth, City College Plymouth, Plymouth City Council, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Jabulani, City Bus, GiveBack Project and much more to host various events from food demonstrations, movie nights, storytelling events, well being workshops and cultural events.

Some of these events and activities will be running throughout the year and we are encouraging all the various communities in Plymouth to take part: www.blackhistorymonthplym.co.uk/
